How Long Does It Take to Get Internet in a New Store in China?

Why the question matters more than it seems

Overseas teams planning a China opening usually build the schedule around fit-out, permits and staffing. Connectivity gets squeezed in last — and it is the one item that can stop a store from trading on day one.

What actually drives the timeline

  • Fibre availability at the unit. If the building already has fibre from a carrier, lead time shortens. If not, you are waiting on infrastructure, not paperwork.
  • Carrier installation slot. Application, cabling and scheduling typically take weeks.
  • Mall or property management approval. Store units inside shopping centres add a second approval layer. This is the step most first-time operators underestimate.
  • Device readiness. Router, CPE, SIM real-name registration and configuration still have to happen after the line arrives.

The pattern that de-risks an opening date

Open on 5G, cut over to fibre later. A 5G CPE can often be activated the same day where signal is adequate, which covers POS, ordering, delivery platforms and light CCTV backhaul on opening day. Once fibre is installed it becomes the primary link, and the 5G stays as backup.

This is not a workaround for bad planning — it is how most chains here manage opening risk, because the two links also end up being physically separate, which is exactly what you want for backup anyway.

What to prepare before anyone surveys the site

  • Store list with city, mall or street address, and target opening date
  • Which systems must never go down (POS, delivery ordering, CCTV)
  • Who signs off on fapiao (invoice) terms, and the invoicing entity

With that, a survey can confirm fibre availability and 5G signal per store and return a per-store primary plus backup design rather than a generic quote.

Shenzhen Xiangchen Information Technology Co., Ltd. supports chain stores across Guangdong and Beijing. Timelines and pricing are subject to a site survey and the actual plan. More answers in our FAQ for brands opening stores in China, or contact us.
