Backup Internet for Chain Stores: Second Line or 5G?
Why two broadband lines can still fail together, how 5G differs, and the checks that make failover real.
Why two lines fail at once
Two broadband lines from the same carrier over the same building entry share the same physical path. When the path is cut or building equipment fails, both go down. Real backup needs path separation, which is why 5G is commonly paired with the fixed line.
How the options compare
- Second broadband — stable and cost predictable, good for uplink-heavy sites, but limited protection if it shares the route.
- Add 5G — independent path, resistant to construction cuts, well suited to POS, ordering and delivery traffic.
Where budget allows, a fixed primary link plus 5G backup is the most common pattern for chain stores.
Checks that make failover real
- Confirm the store router supports dual WAN and failover.
- Segment POS and delivery ordering away from CCTV backhaul and staff browsing.
- Run a failover drill: drop the primary link, verify checkout works, restore — outside trading hours.
- Record both links per store so faults can be located fast.
